Scientific Research Activities at the Faculty of Geography – University of Belgrade

The Faculty of Geography in Belgrade, in addition to educational work, actively fosters scientific research as the basic framework of development and modernisation of higher education teaching. Within its scientific research, the Faculty performs and develops scientific research independently or in cooperation with other scientific institutions both nationally and internationally, in the fields of fundamental and applied research, development of projects, spatial plans, studies and detailed reports. The contents and findings of scientific research and professional activities are in compliance with the purpose and objectives of accreditation of higher education institutions. The acquired skills and obtained results are included in the educational process. The Faculty provides, innovates and maintains scientific research equipment in the labs, establishes international cooperation, develops the information system, publishes scientific books, monographs and publications and organizes international and domestic scientific gatherings in order to encourage the academic staff to be actively involved in scientific research and to publish the achieved results.

The scientific research at the Faculty of Geography is characterized by openness and interaction in solving numerous problems and so the staff of the Faculty are researchers and associates in various projects and numerous scientific tasks. The programme of scientific research at the Faculty of Geography – University of Belgrade entails fundamental and applied studies in the fields of geography, spatial planning, demography, geospatial and environmental science and tourism. In the future, the Faculty will encourage the scientific research activities of importance to the inclusion of Serbia in contemporary integration and  scientific trends in Europe and in the world and it will develop cooperation with the corresponding scientific institutions in Serbia and abroad by signing cooperation agreements on scientific research projects of common interest.

The previous scientific research activities of the Faculty of Geography in Belgrade can be best defined by the fact that in the last 120 years a large number of international and national projects have been delivered and financed by state institutions and the economy. Information technologies have become an integral part of all activities at the Faculty, and considering the complexity of scientific research and the manner of teaching process, the information and telecommunication infrastructure of the Faculty has become one of the most complex infrastructures at Belgrade University. Early in 1997 one of the first internet/intranet web applications was launched with the possibility of distribution of vectoral maps via internet by using web browsers. That was undoubtedly the first such application in Serbia.

In 2000 a modern computer lab with thirty computers was donated to the Faculty of Geography by Public Company “PTT Srbija”, which provided technical conditions for better engagement in the area of Geographical Information System (GIS). The lab supports the scientific research that requires GIS and it is part of the teaching process as well. ICT lessons and GIS lessons are conducted there for students of undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies of the Faculty of Geography.

In cooperation with the Assembly of the City of Belgrade the Faculty has organized numerous courses for the city authorities and public companies founded by the City of Belgrade. These courses ranged from basic computer using courses to advanced courses of GIS technology.

Having identified the Faculty of Geography as a serious partner, with great scientific and educational capacities, large world software companies such as Microsoft, Oracle and Intergraph established cooperation and donated valuable software to the Faculty. With these donations, the Faculty got a possibility of making the students acquainted with the most recent trends in the software industry. Furthermore, specialized courses for data bases organized according to the methodology of Oracle company prepare the students for obtaining worldwide recognized industrial certificates in the area of information technologies. All this has qualified the computer lab  to take part in relevant GIS projects such as “Establishing GIS Service of Belgrade Waterworks” and forming a GIS data base that will be used in managing public transportation system in Belgrade. Staying up-to-date, the Faculty has been involved in remote sensing, satellite imagery analysis and finding new applications for LIDAR technology in geography, spatial planning and the environment.

International cooperation

The Faculty of Geography has close cooperation with numerous universities in Serbia and abroad, with various institutions in need of the findings of our studies and their application. International cooperation was established when Jovan Cvijic defended his doctoral thesis in Vienna and has existed since the Geographical Institute was founded in Belgrade. It has been intensified recently and is based on participation in international projects, joint scientific research, partnership through academic networks, students’ mobility, our teachers as visiting professors and lecturers at domestic and foreign universities. The experts from European countries have also visited our Faculty and given lectures for academic staff and students. The intensity of this cooperation was highly dependant on the current social and political situation. During the last decade, the intensity of international cooperation has increased due to various activities and the Faculty has signed cooperation agreements with numerous universities both in Serbia and abroad.
